PM Modi’s 12 Years of Mann Ki Baat: Bringing Jammu & Kashmir’s Stories to the National Spotlight

On October 3, 2014, Prime Minister Narendra Modi began a unique conversation with the people of India through Mann Ki Baat. Over 12 years and 138 episodes, the programme has brought inspiring stories from across the country to the national stage. Jammu and Kashmir has remained an important part of this journey, with its farmers, youth, artisans, women and traditional communities finding a voice in the conversation. One such story is that of Manzoor Ahmad and Kashmir’s pencil slate industry. Featured in Mann Ki Baat, his work received wider attention and created new employment opportunities for local people. The programme has also highlighted Jammu and Kashmir’s distinctive local products. Traditional Kaladi cheese, described as the “Mozzarella of Kashmir,” showcased the region’s rich dairy heritage and the potential of value-added local products. Ramban’s Sulai Honey, known for its distinctive qualities and GI recognition, became another example of a local product gaining wider national visibility. From Dal Lake’s nadru and Bhaderwah’s lavender cultivation to Kashmir’s agricultural products reaching distant markets, these stories reflect a changing Jammu and Kashmir. After 12 years, Mann Ki Baat continues to connect India through stories of talent, enterprise, tradition and hope—with the voice of Jammu and Kashmir carrying the fragrance of its soil, the strength of its people and the promise of a new future.
