Srinagar, July 27,2026- Women entrepreneurs are playing an increasingly significant role in Jammu & Kashmir’s economic transformation, with more than 1.84 lakh women-led Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) contributing to employment generation, innovation, and inclusive growth across the Union Territory. Backed by government initiatives, improved financial inclusion, skill development programmes, and easier access to credit, women are successfully building enterprises across a wide range of sectors, creating new opportunities for themselves and their communities.
The rise of women-led entrepreneurship marks a major shift in the region’s socio-economic landscape. From traditional handicrafts and handloom products to modern technology startups, food processing units, eco-tourism ventures, agriculture-based enterprises, wellness businesses, and e-commerce platforms, women are expanding their presence across industries that were once largely male-dominated.
Jammu & Kashmir has also witnessed impressive growth in its startup ecosystem, with more than 300 women-led startups registered in recent years. These ventures are not only introducing innovative business models but are also helping preserve the region’s rich cultural heritage by promoting local crafts, organic products, and sustainable tourism experiences. Many of these startups are leveraging digital platforms to market their products nationwide and internationally, enabling local artisans and entrepreneurs to reach global customers.
Government schemes have played a crucial role in supporting this entrepreneurial journey. Financial assistance under the Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMMY) has enabled thousands of women to access collateral-free loans, allowing them to establish or expand their businesses without facing traditional financing barriers. Easy access to institutional credit has empowered women from both urban and rural areas to transform business ideas into successful enterprises.
Self-Help Groups (SHGs) have emerged as another major catalyst for women’s economic empowerment. Across villages in Jammu & Kashmir, women associated with SHGs are producing handicrafts, processed foods, spices, organic products, traditional textiles, and other locally made goods. Through collective efforts, training programmes, and financial support, many SHGs have evolved into sustainable enterprises that generate steady incomes while creating employment opportunities for others in their communities.
Skill development and entrepreneurship training programmes organised by various government departments and development agencies have further strengthened women’s participation in the economy. Workshops on digital marketing, financial literacy, packaging, branding, quality certification, and online commerce have equipped women entrepreneurs with the knowledge required to compete in modern markets. These initiatives have significantly improved the ability of local businesses to scale up operations and expand beyond regional boundaries.
Women entrepreneurs are also making notable contributions to sectors such as eco-tourism and hospitality by promoting homestays, cultural tourism, local cuisine, and environmentally sustainable travel experiences. Their participation is helping diversify Jammu & Kashmir’s tourism offerings while generating livelihoods in remote and rural areas.
The growing success of women-led MSMEs is contributing not only to economic growth but also to greater social empowerment. Financial independence has enabled women to invest in education, healthcare, and improved living standards for their families while inspiring more young women to pursue entrepreneurship as a viable career path.
With continued policy support, improved market access, digital connectivity, and financial inclusion, women entrepreneurs are expected to play an even greater role in shaping Jammu & Kashmir’s future. From self-help groups operating in villages to innovative startups reaching global markets, women-led enterprises are becoming powerful engines of inclusive development, employment generation, and sustainable economic progress across the Union Territory.
