As a family from South Africa, our first visit to India has been nothing short of extraordinary. The excitement began with a cross-country train journey that took us from the vibrant city of Mumbai to the tranquil lakes of Udaipur, onward to the majestic palaces of Jaipur, and finally to the historic streets of Delhi. Each city welcomed us with its unique charm, history, and vibrant culture, creating a perfect prelude to the highlight of our trip—Kashmir. Our arrival in Kashmir was like stepping into a winter wonderland. It was our first time experiencing snow, and the beauty of the snow-covered mountains and valleys left us in awe. The crisp, cold air was invigorating, though a stark contrast to the warm smiles and hospitality of the Kashmiri people. From the moment we arrived, we were met with kindness and generosity that made us feel right at home. The local cuisine added another layer of joy to our journey. We savoured every bite of the delicious Kashmiri dishes. Each meal was a celebration of rich spices and culinary traditions, perfectly suited to the chilly weather. Of course, traveling in a foreign land always presents challenges. The biting cold and navigating unfamiliar transportation were hurdles we had to overcome. But the people of Kashmir were always ready to assist us, whether by guiding us with travel arrangements or simply offering words of encouragement. Their helpfulness even extended to ensuring our train back to Delhi was on time, allowing us to catch our flight back to South Africa without worry. Though this is our first time in India and Kashmir, it will undoubtedly not be our last. The memories we’ve made here, the breathtaking landscapes, and the kindness of the people have left an indelible mark on our hearts. As we prepare to head back to South Africa, we carry with us not just souvenirs but stories of a place that welcomed us with open arms and showed us the true meaning of hospitality.
