Srinagar, May 17, 2025 – Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha was briefed by the Divisional Commissioner Kashmir and the Deputy Commissioner Kupwara on the ongoing appraisal of requirements and construction of bunkers in the Tangdhar Sector, aimed at enhancing border security and protecting residents from cross-border shelling by Pakistan. The briefing, conducted through Gram Sabhas, highlighted the administration’s efforts to address the needs of communities affected by recent unprovoked heavy shelling
The J&K administration is prioritising the construction of both community bunkers and individual bunkers to safeguard border residents, particularly in Kupwara, Uri, Poonch, and Rajouri, which faced intense shelling after India’s Operation Sindoor targeted terror infrastructure across the Line of Control . The appraisal process, involving Gram Sabhas, ensures community input on bunker locations and design to meet local needs effectively.
Sinha’s instructions align with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s recent assurance to take up the construction of individual bunkers with the Government of India for enhanced protection. Over 9,500 bunkers have already been built along the LoC, with additional funding and plans in place to expand coverage. The administration is also addressing rehabilitation of affected families, providing immediate assistance and developing a comprehensive rehabilitation plan to rebuild livelihoods and infrastructure.
The Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Vijay Kumar Bidhuri, and Deputy Commissioner Kupwara, Ayushi Sudan, outlined ongoing efforts to clear unexploded shells and expedite bunker construction. The administration has urged residents to stay indoors and avoid roadsides for safety during clearance operations. Sinha reiterated the government’s commitment to standing with border communities, ensuring their safety and dignity amidst ongoing tensions.
As the ceasefire holds, the focus remains on completing bunkers and rehabilitating displaced families, reinforcing the resilience of Tangdhar and other border areas against future escalations.
