Kupwara DC Ms. Ayushi Sudan disburses Rs 10.05 crore in educational assistance to construction workers

Kupwara, March 22, 2025 – In a significant step towards supporting the welfare of construction workers, Ms. Ayushi Sudan, Deputy Commissioner of Kupwara, disbursed educational assistance worth Rs 10.05 crore to 19,903 registered construction workers under the Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board scheme. The initiative, aimed at bolstering educational opportunities for the children of workers, underscores the district administration’s commitment to uplifting marginalised communities.

The disbursement ceremony took place on Saturday, during which DC Kupwara handed over a cheque to the Assistant Labour Commissioner Kupwara. The funds are set to be transferred directly into the bank accounts of the beneficiaries, ensuring transparency and efficiency in the process. The BOCWWB scheme, designed to provide financial aid for education, healthcare, and other essential needs, has emerged as a vital lifeline for construction workers in the region.

Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Sudan emphasised the importance of education as a tool for empowerment and economic security. “This assistance is a step towards ensuring that the children of our hardworking construction workers have access to quality education, paving the way for a brighter future,” she said. The move has been hailed as a testament to the administration’s focus on inclusive development.

This latest disbursement follows an earlier allocation on March 3, 2025, when Rs 3.50 crore was provided to 8,027 beneficiaries under the same scheme. With the total assistance now exceeding Rs 13.55 crore this month, the Kupwara district administration has reached over 27,000 workers, highlighting a sustained effort to address their needs.

Officials from the Labour Department and local representatives praised the initiative, noting its potential to alleviate financial burdens and promote social equity. The BOCWWB scheme continues to play a pivotal role in supporting the construction worker community, aligning with broader governmental efforts to enhance welfare and livelihoods in Jammu and Kashmir.

The event concluded with a call to ensure that all eligible workers are registered under the scheme to maximise its reach and impact. For now, the disbursement of Rs 10.05 crore stands as a beacon of hope for thousands of families in Kupwara district.
