Srinagar, October 30,2025:In a major boost to horticulture logistics and trade, more than 14,000 metric tonnes (MTs) of apples have been transported from Kashmir to various parts of the country through the Indian Railways network this season. The initiative has significantly streamlined the movement of the Valley’s premium produce, ensuring faster, cost-effective, and eco-friendly transportation.
Officials from the Northern Railway stated that the dedicated apple freight service from Sopore, Anantnag, and Baramulla stations has played a crucial role in connecting Kashmir’s fruit growers to national markets like Delhi, Mumbai, and Ahmedabad. This efficient rail-based logistics system has helped minimise post-harvest losses, reduce transit time, and stabilise prices for growers.
The Kashmir apple industry, one of the backbones of the region’s economy, has greatly benefited from the government’s focus on improving cold storage, packaging, and transportation infrastructure. The use of the railway network aligns with the ‘Vocal for Local’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiatives, enhancing market accessibility for J&K’s farmers.
Authorities also highlighted the environmental advantages of rail transport, noting that the shift from road to rail has cut carbon emissions and decongested highways. With increased coordination between Indian Railways and the Horticulture Department of Jammu and Kashmir, further expansion of freight services is being planned to handle higher volumes in the coming months.
The initiative reflects the administration’s commitment to supporting Kashmir’s horticulture sector, boosting rural livelihoods, and strengthening the region’s role in India’s agri-economy.
