Pahalgam, April 25, 2025: In the wake of the tragic Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives in Jammu and Kashmir’s Baisaran Valley on April 22, 2025, a remarkable story of human kindness has emerged. A family from Maharashtra narrowly escaped the violence, crediting their survival to the selfless actions of a local Kashmiri taxi driver. “We survived because a Kashmiri brother gave us shelter in his house,” the family said, their gratitude highlighting a beacon of hope amid the tragedy.
The taxi driver, a resident of Pahalgam, acted decisively when the attack, carried out by The Resistance Front, threw the region into turmoil. As terrified tourists sought safety, he welcomed the Maharashtra family into his home, providing food, shelter, and comfort during the chaotic hours that followed. “This attack was a crime against humanity. One act doesn’t define our Kashmir,” he told local reporters, underscoring his commitment to helping those in distress.
The family, hailing from Nashik, described their terrifying ordeal and the driver’s unwavering support. “He opened his doors without hesitation, treating us like his own. His kindness saved us,” a family member recounted, emphasising the spirit of unity between communities. The driver also reportedly aided other stranded tourists, ensuring they had essentials and coordinating with authorities for their safe evacuation.
The Pahalgam attack, among the deadliest in Jammu and Kashmir since the 2019 Pulwama bombing, has sparked widespread sorrow and prompted intensified security measures, including special flights to evacuate tourists. Amid the grief, the driver’s heroism has resonated deeply, with social media posts celebrating his compassion. “This is the heart of Kashmir—people helping each other, no matter their background,” said a local who witnessed his efforts.
Community leaders have called for the driver’s bravery to be formally recognized, noting that his actions challenge divisive narratives and reflect the region’s strong communal bonds. As Jammu and Kashmir grapples with the attack’s aftermath, this story of courage and hospitality serves as a powerful reminder of humanity’s ability to shine through even the darkest moments.
