Kashmir, September 14,2026-Indian archery witnessed one of its most defining moments on Sunday as Dhiraj Bommadevara became the country’s first-ever Men’s Individual Recurve gold medallist at the Archery World Cup Final, held in Saltillo, Mexico. The 25-year-old’s triumph marks a watershed moment for Indian recurve archery, ending a long wait for the nation’s men to reach the summit of the sport’s most prestigious season-ending event.
Bommadevara defeated Japan’s Nakanishi Junya in a gold medal match that will be remembered as one of the most gripping contests in recent archery history. The two archers were locked in a fierce battle throughout, with the set scores reading 28-28, 28-29, 29-28, 28-30 and 28-27 — leaving the contest tied at the end of regulation and forcing the title to be decided in a shoot-off. Under immense pressure, with the gold medal hanging by a thread, Bommadevara produced a composed and clinical shot, hitting a perfect 10 to edge out Nakanishi’s 9 and claim the title 6-5.
The victory is only the second individual World Cup Final gold in India’s archery history. The first came nearly two decades ago, when Dola Banerjee won the women’s individual title in Dubai back in 2007. Bommadevara’s win therefore ends a 19-year drought for India at the individual level in the World Cup Final, and marks the country’s first-ever men’s title at the event since its inception.
What makes the achievement even more remarkable is the manner in which Bommadevara navigated the competition. Having returned without a medal from both the 2023 and 2024 editions of the World Cup Final, he entered this year’s tournament determined to make amends. He began his campaign with a dominant 7-1 win over Olympic medallist Berkim Tümer of Türkiye in the quarterfinals, before producing another composed performance to defeat two-time Olympic silver medallist Jean-Charles Valladont of France 7-1 in the semifinals — setting up the summit clash against Nakanishi.
Bommadevara’s qualification for the World Cup Final itself was built on a stellar season. He secured his berth in Saltillo by winning the men’s individual recurve title at the third stage of the 2026 World Cup in Antalya, where he also claimed gold in the mixed team event alongside Kumkum Mohod. Interestingly, he was India’s lone representative in the men’s or women’s recurve and compound individual categories at this year’s World Cup Final, having been the only archer from the country to qualify across those disciplines.
An Indian Army personnel holding the rank of Subedar, Bommadevara has been steadily building a formidable career over the past few years. He already holds a Gold medal at the 2025 Asian Championships in Dhaka, where he became the first-ever Indian male recurve archer to win an individual continental title. He also holds an Asian Games silver medal in the team event from Hangzhou 2022, along with multiple World Cup medals across individual and team categories.
There will be little time for Bommadevara to savour his historic win, however, as he now turns his attention to the upcoming Asian Games in Japan, where he is set to lead India’s recurve challenge. Having fallen in the quarterfinals at the Hangzhou Asian Games before winning a team silver, Bommadevara will look to carry the momentum from his World Cup Final triumph into the continental showpiece.
The win has been widely celebrated across the country, with archery fans and officials hailing it as a landmark moment that could inspire a new generation of Indian recurve archers to dream bigger on the global stage.
