Anantnag, January 14,2026-In a significant boost to the region’s agricultural infrastructure, Kashmir on Tuesday received its first-ever direct fertiliser freight train at the Anantnag goods terminal. The milestone initiative is being seen as a major step towards strengthening farm supply chains and ensuring timely availability of critical agricultural inputs across the Valley.
Officials said the direct freight connectivity will reduce dependence on long road-based transportation routes, cut delays, and lower logistics costs associated with fertiliser supply. With the Valley’s agriculture sector highly sensitive to seasonal timelines, the move is expected to support farmers during peak sowing periods and enhance overall productivity.
The arrival of the fertiliser rake at Anantnag marks an important expansion of rail-based logistics in south Kashmir, paving the way for more efficient movement of essential commodities. Authorities indicated that similar freight operations may be scaled up in the future to include other agricultural inputs and goods.
Farmers’ groups have welcomed the development, expressing hope that improved supply chain efficiency will translate into timely distribution, stable availability, and better planning of agricultural operations across Kashmir.
The initiative aligns with broader efforts to modernise agricultural logistics and strengthen rural economies in the region.
