Srinagar, July 22, 2025:Pashmina is a super soft and super warm luxury shawl that is indigenous to the beautiful valley of Kashmir. For centuries, it has been a symbol of elegance, status, and artisanal excellence — today, it continues to captivate global attention for its blend of tradition and trend.
The Kashmir Pashmina shawl, often referred to as “soft gold,” is made from the fine undercoat wool of the Changthangi goat, found in the high-altitude regions of Ladakh. This rare wool is hand-spun, dyed using natural pigments, and woven by master artisans on traditional looms — a painstaking process that can take several weeks to complete.
This timeless textile is more than a fashion statement — it is a heritage product steeped in cultural significance. Every Pashmina shawl from Kashmir carries with it generations of craftsmanship and a commitment to sustainable, slow fashion.
Supported under the #IncredibleIndia initiative, the Indian government and the Jammu & Kashmir Handloom Department are promoting authentic Kashmiri Pashmina across domestic and international markets. This includes GI tagging and authentication labels to protect genuine Pashmina products from widespread imitation.
“In a world of mass production, Pashmina represents the soul of Kashmir — handwoven tradition, warmth, and artistry,” said an official from the Directorate of Handicrafts and Handloom, Jammu and Kashmir.
Tourism in Kashmir has seen a revival in recent years, and Pashmina shawls have become a sought-after souvenir for travelers seeking both style and cultural substance. These elegant shawls, whether worn or gifted, symbolise the spirit of the valley — resilient, refined, and richly woven in heritage.
