Kashmir Ahead

Kashmir Marathon 2026: J&K police holds “Run for Unity” to promote peace, fitness and national integration

Srinagar, October 1,2026- Runners of all ages took to the streets of the Valley for the Kashmir Marathon 2026, a “Run for Unity” organised by the Jammu and Kashmir Police. The event combined sport with a message of harmony, brotherhood and national integration.

Students, young athletes, police personnel, women, senior citizens and fitness enthusiasts gathered at the starting point in the early morning chill. Senior police officers flagged off the race, and the route filled with runners in event T-shirts, many carrying the tricolour and unity banners.

A Tribute to the Iron Man of India

The Run for Unity is linked to Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day), observed every year on October 31 to honour Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Patel is remembered as the “Iron Man of India” for his role in integrating the princely states into a single nation. J&K Police marks the occasion each year with pledge ceremonies, parades and unity runs across districts, and the Kashmir Marathon is the largest of these public events.

Something for Every Runner

The marathon was designed to be open to all, with different race categories for different levels of fitness. Competitive athletes ran the longer distances, while the shorter fun runs were meant for families, children, women and senior citizens. Organisers said the aim was to make the event a community celebration and not only a contest for trained runners.

Medical teams, hydration points, traffic management and security arrangements were in place along the route so that participants could run safely. Volunteers handed out water and refreshments, and cheering crowds lined parts of the course.

Sport as a Bridge

Police officers said the marathon is part of the force’s wider effort to connect with people, especially young people. Over the past few years, J&K Police has organised cycle races, football and cricket tournaments, badminton events and marathons in both Kashmir and Jammu. Its Run for Unity in Jammu in December 2025 drew more than 8,000 runners, from children as young as eight to senior citizens in their eighties.

Officials said such events help identify and nurture local sporting talent while encouraging a disciplined and healthy lifestyle. They also argued that a shared run in which police and civilians take part side by side builds trust and goodwill.

Winners and Participants

Winners in the various categories received cash prizes, trophies and certificates. Every participant who completed the run was given a finisher’s medal, a T-shirt and refreshments. Many runners said the atmosphere mattered as much as the race. Young participants said they were proud to be part of an event that promoted peace and a positive image of Kashmir.

A Showcase for Kashmir

Kashmir’s scenic landscape, with its lakes, mountains and clean autumn air, makes it a natural setting for running events. Organisers hope the marathon will grow into a regular fixture on India’s running calendar and draw runners from other states, which could also support sports tourism in the region.

The programme ended with participants taking a pledge to uphold the unity, integrity and security of the nation, followed by the prize distribution ceremony.

As the runners dispersed, the message of the day was simple: unity can be built one step at a time, and a community that runs together can stay together.
