Srinagar, July 17, 2025: The Department of Handicrafts and Handloom, Kashmir, has achieved a significant milestone by generating a cumulative revenue of over Rs 1.07 crore over the last three financial years through the sale of products crafted by trainees at its training centres across the valley. This accomplishment highlights the department’s sustained efforts in skill development and artisan empowerment, fostering sustainable livelihoods while preserving the region’s rich craft heritage. In a press statement, a spokesperson for the Handicrafts and Handloom Department revealed that the revenue, fully deposited in government treasuries, was generated from the sale of a diverse range of handicraft and handloom products. These include Pashmina products, Sozni, Crewel, Chain Stitch, Kani Shawls, carpets, and various handloom fabrics produced by trainees enrolled in over 400 departmental training centres. The spokesperson emphasised, “This reflects a perfect example of how government funds are recycled back into the system and utilised for development activities related to the promotion of the craft sector.”
The department’s training programs integrate practical, market-oriented production into their modules, ensuring trainees gain both technical proficiency and a real-time understanding of the commercial aspects of the craft sector. This approach has not only empowered artisans but also enhanced their earning potential, contributing to the socio-economic development of Jammu & Kashmir.Efforts are underway to further modernize training infrastructure, introduce contemporary design elements, and establish stronger market linkages through departmental sale outlets and participation in national-level exhibitions. These initiatives aim to expand market access for trainee-crafted products while preserving Kashmir’s unique handicraft and handloom traditions.
