Srinagar, January 21,2026-Kashmir is experiencing a severe cold spell as Chillai Kalan, the 40-day harshest winter period, tightens its grip across the region. Temperatures have plunged, with many areas witnessing frost and sub-zero conditions, making daily life challenging for residents.
Authorities have urged citizens to take precautions against the freezing temperatures, especially the elderly and children. Schools and health facilities have been advised to remain prepared for weather-related emergencies.
Local residents reported icy roads, frost-covered fields, and the need for warm clothing and heating arrangements. “This period is the coldest of the year, and people have to remain vigilant,” said a local official.
Officials also warned of potential water supply disruptions due to freezing pipelines and encouraged the use of thermal insulation wherever possible. With Chillai Kalan expected to continue for several more weeks, Kashmir braces itself for persistent cold conditions and the associated hardships.
