Jammu, August 27, 2025 – Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Wednesday held discussions with Divisional Commissioner Jammu, Ramesh Kumar, and other senior officials to assess the ongoing flood situation and coordinate rescue and relief operations in the flood-ravaged Jammu division. Amid relentless heavy rainfall causing widespread flooding and landslides, Sinha directed authorities to prioritize the restoration of power, communication, and water supply in areas where floodwaters are receding, ensuring swift recovery for affected communities.In a statement shared via the Office of the Lieutenant Governor on X, Sinha highlighted the scale of the response: “Spoke to Divisional Commissioner, Jammu Ramesh Kumar & other Senior Officials and took stock of flood situation and rescue & relief Operations. Directed the officials for restoration of Power, Communication, Water Supply on priority in areas where flood water is receding. More than 5000 people were evacuated from low-lying flooded areas to safety. Army, NDRF & SDRF is working in coordination with Div Com’s office and we are ensuring that there is adequate supply of relief materials & all possible assistance is being given to those affected.
“The Jammu region has been battered by over 380 mm of rainfall in less than 38 hours, leading to river levels surging above danger marks in the Tawi, Chenab, Ujh, Ravi, and Basantar, inundating residential and agricultural areas, damaging infrastructure, and triggering landslides. Over 3,500 people have been rescued in Jammu alone, with the total evacuations exceeding 5,000 across low-lying zones. The coordinated efforts of the Indian Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) under the Divisional Commissioner’s office have been pivotal in these operations, alongside the distribution of relief materials to those impacted.This crisis follows earlier disasters, including a deadly cloudburst in Kishtwar’s Chashoti village earlier in August, which claimed over 60 lives and left 32 missing, prompting visits from Sinha to injured survivors at Government Medical College Jammu and assurances of rehabilitation support from the central and J&K administrations.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has also convened emergency meetings, emphasizing vigilance and the restoration of essential services amid forecasts of continued heavy rain and potential cloudbursts through the week’s end. Telecom blackouts, addressed by the Centre’s directive for intra-circle roaming activation until September 2, have compounded challenges to emergency responses, though technical teams are actively working on repairs.Authorities urge residents to stay cautious, avoid flood-prone areas, and monitor official updates via control rooms and apps. The government remains committed to comprehensive rehabilitation, with Rs 4.13 crore already disbursed to victims in prior incidents, extending similar aid to the current flood-affected families.
