“Through the teaching profession, we attempt to mould the minds and hearts of the younger people and make them fit citizens for the community which we wish to build.”- Words of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan (2nd President of India 1962-1967) Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was a great scholar and educator and as a mark of respect, the tradition of celebrating Teachers’ Day began from the year 1962, on his birth anniversary.

This year on September 5, 2022, Teachers’ Day was celebrated in Jammu & Kashmir, with the Lieutenant Governor extending his best wishes to all the teachers in the UT. Remembering the slain innocent Kashmiri Pandit teacher Rajni Bala of Government High School, Gopalpura, Kulgam, the Lt Governor criticised the heinous act of some devious people. The time has come and the security forces are working on it, he said. Too much blood has been shed of innocent people. The society too needs to stand up against it. If we cannot do anything, at least we can condemn such activities, the LG said.

He appealed to everyone saying that teachers who are imparting knowledge and values in children, leaving their families behind, if they are being targeted at gun shot, no religion conforms to this, he said. Nothing is greater sin than this, the LG stated. It is the duty of every citizen to stop disruptive people and you should all come forward as a force.

On the Teachers’ Day, the Lieutenant Governor announced the start of a programme to honour India’s great leaders Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri ji, whose birthdays fall on October 2. He said there were two things close to Bapu ji’s heart. Truth and Non Violence. The Lt Governor has resolved that in every school and college, debates, essay writing, competitions, etc on Truth and Non Violence, and such activities and programmes will be initiated by the School Education Department. It is my humble submission that this programme needs to be successfully implemented in Jammu & Kashmir, the LG said.

He said on October 2 function, the rewarded children will be called to Srinagar for felicitation by eminent Gandhians so that ‘Truth and Ahimsa’ is not just limited to speeches but followed in conduct and behavior too.
