J&K healthcare sector receives Rs 3,481 crore boost over Last 4 years

Srinagar, March 24, 2025 – The Government of India has injected Rs 3,481.03 crore into Jammu and Kashmir’s healthcare sector over the past four years, aimed at enhancing infrastructure and ensuring accessible, affordable medical services across the Union Territory. The funds, allocated under various Centrally Sponsored Schemes, were detailed in a recent statement, highlighting a significant push to strengthen healthcare delivery in the region.

Under the National Health Mission , J&K saw a steady rise in funding: Rs 459.10 crore in 2021-22, Rs 651.52 crore in 2022-23, and Rs 805.22 crore in 2023-24. These allocations have supported a range of initiatives, from upgrading facilities to improving primary healthcare services. Additionally, the Pradhan Mantri Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM-ABHIM) contributed Rs 16.11 crore in 2021-22, Rs 1.00 crore in 2022-23, and Rs 44.01 crore in 2023-24, focusing on modernising health infrastructure.

Investments in medical education also featured prominently, with Rs 11.47 crore disbursed in 2021-22 and Rs 7 crore in 2023-24 under a scheme to strengthen and upgrade medical colleges for postgraduate seats. However, no funds were released during this period for increasing MBBS seats at existing medical colleges or establishing new colleges linked to district or referral hospitals.

Addressing speculation about a potential All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in North Kashmir, the government clarified that no such proposal is currently under consideration. This has sparked discussions among locals who had hoped for a premier healthcare institution in the region.

The substantial funding reflects a broader commitment to improving healthcare access in J&K, though some gaps remain. The increase in NHM allocations over the years signals a sustained effort to meet the region’s growing needs. Further details are expected as the government continues to roll out its healthcare agenda.
