Srinagar, July 22, 2025 – Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has declared that Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) has transcended its turbulent history, embracing a future defined by peace, security, and development. In an interview with a national news channel, Sinha reflected on his tenure since August 7, 2020, emphasising the transformative changes in the Union Territory over the past five years.
“People and history will judge what has changed in the last five years,” Sinha stated, highlighting a shift from a troubled past marked by unrest to a period of stability and growth. He underscored that peace, prosperity, and a people-centric approach have been the cornerstones of his administration. “Stone pelting and hartals are now history. Schools, colleges, and businesses function without disruption, and nightlife has made a comeback,” he noted, pointing to the normaliSation of daily life in J&K.
Sinha also highlighted significant economic progress, stating, “J&K’s economy has doubled in the past five years,” signalling robust economic revival and development. He credited the successful conduct of Assembly elections in 2024 as a testament to the region’s positive transformation, reinforcing public trust in democratic processes.
Addressing security concerns, Sinha emphasiSed the government’s commitment to eradicating terrorism, noting a drastic reduction in terror recruitment, from 100 recruits annually to just one, as a marker of improved security. “Naya Kashmir is peaceful,” he asserted, crediting the J&K Police’s adoption of modern technology and community engagement in countering threats.
Despite these achievements, Sinha acknowledged ongoing tensions with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, particularly over administrative control and issues like officer transfers and the Advocate-General’s appointment. However, he maintained that his relationship with the Chief Minister remains cordial and that he operates within constitutional limits.
Sinha also addressed the region’s status as a Union Territory, urging acceptance of the current reality while expressing optimism about future statehood restoration, as promised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
The Lieutenant Governor’s remarks come amid mixed sentiments, with some praising the progress in J&K, while others, including opposition leaders, question the extent of administrative autonomy and press freedom under his governance.
