Srinagar, August 27, 2025 – In a developing flood alert for the Kashmir Valley, the water level of the Jhelum River at Ram Munshi Bagh in Srinagar has exceeded the alert threshold due to prevailing adverse weather conditions, prompting close monitoring by field teams and activation of contingency plans. The Divisional Commissioner Kashmir has issued an advisory urging residents to exercise extreme caution and avoid venturing near water bodies, with emergency contact numbers provided for assistance. The alert follows four consecutive days of torrential rainfall across Jammu and Kashmir, exacerbating the crisis in the region. Officials from the Irrigation and Flood Control Department reported that the Jhelum has already crossed the flood-alert mark of 21 feet at Sangam in Anantnag district, while at Ram Munshi Bagh, levels were just two feet below the 18-foot alert mark as of Wednesday morning, indicating a rising trend that has now surpassed the threshold. This surge is attributed to heavy overnight rains in the Valley, contributing to widespread flooding, landslides, and infrastructure damage.
Field teams are actively monitoring the situation in real-time, with contingency measures in place to manage potential overflows. The advisory emphasizes public safety, stating: “In view of prevailing weather conditions, Jhelum water levels at Ram Munshi Bagh, Srinagar have crossed Alert levels. Field teams are closely monitoring the situation & contingency plans are in place. People are advised to exercise caution and not venture near water bodies. Contact 112/6005953255 for any emergency.” This comes amid forecasts of continued moderate to intense rainfall, with risks of cloudbursts, flash floods, and landslides until August 27.The broader crisis in Jammu and Kashmir has seen thousands evacuated from low-lying areas, including over 5,000 in Jammu alone, with coordinated efforts by the Army, NDRF, and SDRF. In Kashmir, heavy rains have led to flash floods washing away houses and bridges in remote areas like Kishtwar, though no casualties were reported there.
Jal Shakti Minister Javed Ahmed Rana recently directed round-the-clock surveillance of major rivers, including the Jhelum, Ravi, and Tawi, focusing on early warning systems via mobile apps for real-time updates. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has reviewed operations, prioritizing restoration of power, communication, and water supply as floodwaters recede in some areas.Authorities have established institutional frameworks, including central flood committees and zonal teams, to ensure coordinated responses. Residents are advised to stay updated via official channels, avoid riverbanks, and prepare evacuation plans, especially in flood-prone zones along the Jhelum and its tributaries.
