Jashn-e-Sangam: A celebration of culture and language in J&K

On October 22, 2024, Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Shri Manoj Sinha inaugurated ‘Jashn-e-Sangam’ at Tagore Hall, Srinagar, a three-day literary fest aimed at promoting art, culture, and language in Jammu & Kashmir. Organised by the J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages and Wadies Hindi Shiksha Samiti, this festival underscores the region’s rich cultural diversity and the spirit of Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat, emphasising unity and shared cultural roots. In his address, the LG praised the efforts of the organisers and highlighted the unique blend of art, literature, music, and folk traditions that characterise Jammu & Kashmir. He noted that events like ‘Jashn-e-Sangam’ serve as vital platforms, bringing together individuals from various linguistic and cultural backgrounds to celebrate their collective heritage. He also acknowledged the significant contributions of writers, poets, and literary figures from Kashmir in promoting the Hindi language. He pointed out that even non-Hindi speaking individuals have played a crucial role in enhancing the presence and appreciation of Hindi, thereby fostering a more inclusive linguistic environment. Moreover, he emphasised the importance of promoting multiple languages within educational frameworks, particularly in non-Hindi-speaking regions. The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 supports this initiative by advocating for the use of mother tongues and regional languages as mediums of instruction in schools. Such policies not only enhance cultural pride but also reinforce the values of unity and shared expression among the diverse populations of India. LG Shri Manoj Sinha took this opportunity to commend the steps taken under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi to promote various languages in Jammu & Kashmir, including Hindi, Kashmiri, Dogri, Urdu, Gojri, Pahari, Punjabi, and Shina. He further highlighted the importance of nurturing literary talent among the youth and encouraged them to draw inspiration from the lives and works of prominent figures such as Lalleshwari, Sheikh-ul-Alam, and Sant Kabir Das. During the inauguration, he recognised students from the Kashmir Division who excelled in Hindi during their 10th standard examinations, showcasing the region’s commitment to language education and cultural enrichment. Jashn-e-Sangam stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of unity and cultural pride in Jammu & Kashmir, fostering a greater appreciation for the region’s diverse linguistic heritage while encouraging future generations to carry forward this rich legacy.
