A significant event was held at Block Khonmoh in Srinagar District to conclude the World Toilet Day-2024 campaign, under the theme “Toilets: A Basic Right for Every Citizen.” Organised by the Directorate of Rural Sanitation, Jammu & Kashmir, the event aimed to raise awareness about the vital role of sanitation in public health, dignity, and equality, especially in rural areas facing sanitation challenges. World Toilet Day, observed globally on November 19, serves to highlight the need for improved sanitation facilities and hygiene. The Khonmoh event brought together government officials, local leaders, community members, and school children to promote sanitation practices. Workshops focused on the health risks of poor sanitation and the benefits of toilet access, with information booths educating attendees about waterborne diseases and hygiene. Local residents shared stories of how sanitation improvements, like public toilets, had enhanced their quality of life. School children performed skits to emphasise the connection between sanitation, health, gender equality, and sustainability. A model eco-friendly community toilet facility was also unveiled, symbolising sustainable solutions. The event marked a milestone in Jammu & Kashmir’s push for 100% Open Defecation-Free (ODF) status. Shri Manoj Kumar, Director of Rural Sanitation, reiterated that access to toilets is a fundamental right, essential for health and dignity. The campaign’s success reflects the collective efforts to improve sanitation infrastructure and promote hygiene, ensuring that every citizen has access to basic toilet facilities.
