A 62-year-old progressive farmer, Gurnam Singh from Ranjitpur village in the Marh block of Jammu, is setting an example in modern agriculture by cultivating premium seedless cucumbers through polyhouse farming. Moving beyond traditional farming practices, Singh has adopted protected cultivation to grow high-value crops and meet market demand. According to the information shared, his seedless cucumbers fetch nearly four times the price of regular cucumbers, offering the potential for higher returns. Singh said his crop has started producing a good yield, with approximately 60–70 kilograms of cucumbers harvested every alternate day. He added that local traders visit his polyhouse to purchase the produce, eliminating the need to travel long distances to sell his harvest. His polyhouse was established under the Agriculture Department’s Holistic Agriculture Development Programme (HADP). The project cost approximately ₹17.29 lakh, with a subsidy of ₹16.25 lakh provided by the department. Singh has encouraged fellow farmers to explore government-supported agricultural schemes and adopt modern cultivation techniques. His experience demonstrates how protected farming and high-value crops can help farmers improve productivity and income, even with limited land. His initiative is emerging as an inspiration for farmers in Jammu’s border areas, highlighting the opportunities offered by modern agricultural technology and government assistance.
