The recent heavy rains triggered massive floods across Jammu, Samba, Kathua, Pathankot, and Gurdaspur, causing widespread damage to infrastructure and severely impacting the lives of people in these regions. The disaster demanded urgent response, and the Indian Army immediately launched large-scale rescue and relief operations in close coordination with the civil administration.
Since 26th August, soldiers of the Rising Star Corps have bravely faced raging floodwaters and adverse weather conditions by deploying multiple rescue missions. These missions were supported by helicopters from both the Army and the Air Force, ensuring maximum coverage and timely assistance. With utmost dedication, the Army employed the required number of rescue columns along with specialised equipment, rescuing over 1,000 stranded individuals, including children, students, and paramilitary personnel.
Beyond rescue, the Army also played a vital role in restoring critical communication links between Jammu and Srinagar. Alternate optical fibre cable lines were swiftly laid across damaged bridges to re-establish connectivity. Alongside this, essential relief such as medical aid, food, and supplies was distributed to affected families.
The floods caused severe damage to infrastructure, particularly the eastern portion and approach road to the Tawi Bridge No. 4, which is considered a lifeline for movement in Jammu. Recognising the urgency, engineers of the Tiger Division constructed a 110-feet-long Bailey Bridge under highly challenging conditions. Despite washed-out approaches and limited workspace, the bridge was completed in just under 12 hours, reflecting the unmatched efficiency and commitment of the Indian Army.
The rescue and relief operations carried out by the Indian Army during the Jammu floods highlight their courage, professionalism, and unwavering dedication to the nation. Their swift action not only saved lives but also restored essential connectivity and hope among the people. Such efforts prove once again that the Army stands as a true guardian in times of crisis.
