Gulmarg, October 17,2026- Fresh snowfall has blanketed the mountain range in Gulmarg, covering the peaks in a white sheet and enhancing the natural beauty of the region. The first snowfall of the season in the popular hill resort has turned the landscape into a picture-perfect setting, raising hopes among tourism stakeholders for an early start to the winter season.
A white landscape in the Pir Panjal range
Gulmarg, located in the Pir Panjal range in Baramulla district, is among the most celebrated winter destinations in the country. The latest snowfall has coated the meadows, pine forests and surrounding peaks in white, offering spectacular views to residents and visitors alike. Temperatures in the higher reaches have dropped, bringing a distinct chill to the air.
Local residents said the snow arrived to a warm welcome, as it marks the beginning of the winter tourism cycle on which many families depend. Early snowfall is generally seen as a good sign for the sector, as it sets the stage for skiing, snowboarding and other winter activities.
Boost for Gulmarg tourism
Gulmarg is known for its ski slopes and the Gulmarg Gondola, one of the highest cable car projects in the world, which carries visitors to the upper reaches of Mount Affarwat. Hoteliers, ski instructors, pony operators, sledge pullers and shopkeepers all rely on the winter season for a significant share of their annual income.
Tourism stakeholders say that fresh snowfall during the autumn-to-winter transition is likely to draw travellers eager to experience the Valley’s snow-covered landscapes. Bookings, they said, usually begin to pick up once snow settles on the higher slopes, and early snowfall often extends the length of the season.
Winter sports and adventure
Beyond sightseeing, the snowfall opens the way for winter sports. Gulmarg has long been a favourite among skiers and snowboarders, and it has hosted winter sports events in the past, including the Khelo India Winter Games. Adventure enthusiasts look forward to the snow cover building up on the slopes for skiing, snowboarding, heli-skiing and snowshoe trekking.
The snow also benefits the wider region. Mountain snowpack feeds streams and rivers in the Valley and supports water availability in the months ahead, which is important for agriculture and drinking water supplies.
Advisory for travellers
Officials usually advise visitors to check weather and road conditions before travelling to higher-altitude areas such as Gulmarg, as snowfall can lead to slippery roads and temporary disruptions. Travellers are encouraged to carry warm clothing, drive carefully and follow local guidelines.
With the peaks wrapped in white and the first snow of the season setting the mood, Gulmarg once again lives up to its name as the “Meadow of Flowers” turned winter wonderland, a sight that continues to draw nature lovers from across the country and beyond.
