Srinagar, March 22, 2025 – The Government of India has greenlit the establishment of three new medical colleges in Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, a move set to bolster healthcare education and services in these regions. Announced on March 21, the initiative falls under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme aimed at expanding medical education in underserved and border areas, as confirmed by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare.
Jammu & Kashmir will see new medical colleges in Udhampur and Handwara (Kupwara district), while Ladakh will host its first-ever medical college in Leh. This development is part of a broader national plan to establish 157 new medical colleges, with a focus on aspirational districts. “These institutions will enhance access to quality medical training and healthcare delivery in remote regions,” a ministry spokesperson stated.
The approval builds on J&K’s existing network of five medical colleges in Anantnag, Baramulla, Rajouri, Doda, and Kathua, established in earlier phases of the scheme. Additionally, the government has sanctioned 196 postgraduate (PG) seats and 60 MBBS seats for various medical institutions in the region, further strengthening its capacity. Ladakh’s Leh college marks a historic milestone, addressing the Union Territory’s long-standing need for local medical education infrastructure.
Officials highlighted that the new colleges will alleviate the shortage of healthcare professionals in J&K and Ladakh, where demand has surged amid growing populations and challenging terrains. The decision has been widely welcomed, with local leaders noting its potential to create jobs and improve medical facilities. “This is a transformative step for Ladakh,” said a Leh-based community representative.
The initiative aligns with ongoing healthcare projects, including the AIIMS in Awantipora (Kashmir) and Vijaypur (Jammu), for which ₹2,326.23 crore has been allocated. Construction is progressing steadily, reinforcing the GoI’s commitment to elevating healthcare standards in the region.
As of today, March 22, 2025, further details on timelines and funding allocations are awaited, with the Ministry expected to collaborate with local administrations for swift implementation.
