Gandhi Jayanti in J&K: LG Manoj Sinha Urges People to Make Service a Habit Today I extend my heartfelt greetings to all the countrymen on Bapu Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday, said the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu & Kashmir, Shri Manoj Sinha. About a hundred years ago, in the Young India issue of January 8, 1925, Bapu said that the true source of the symbol of rights is the performance of one’s duties. If we all perform our duties honestly, then there will be no need to search for rights. Following this sentiment of Bapu and the path shown by him, I can say that the current Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi ji himself took up the broom on 2nd October 2014. And today, the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan has become a movement. Its impact is now visible across the country. During the fortnight of Seva Parv, we have seen everywhere, be it Kashmir or Jammu, how many citizens have performed their duties with great enthusiasm in every campaign with the spirit of community participation. This spirit of service should not be limited to just a fortnight or a date on the calendar. I believe this resolution needs to be taken today. Rather, let this become a habit in our lives. I believe that this feeling of service and work should be in everyone’s hearts, and this will be a true tribute to Bapu, LG stated. न त्वहं कामये राज्यं न स्वर्गं नापुनर्भवम्। कामये दुःखतप्तानां प्राणिनामार्तिनाशनम्॥ This means that I neither desire the kingdom nor heaven nor salvation. I just want to serve humanity. I want to alleviate the suffering of distressed people. Be it the administration, government officials or voluntary organizations, I believe that the test of everyone’s duties and service work is what difference these works have made in the lives of people in remote areas and especially in the lives of the poor and deprived. True service is considered only when there is some consistency between words and actions, LG pointed out. Bapu considered India in its original form as the land of work. In an article in August 1925, he said that India was one of the few countries in the world which still retained its ancient institutions. He once said that India’s mission is different from that of other countries. India has such capability and capacity that it can earn the biggest name in the world in the field of religion. In another article in August 1920, he wrote that India has a message for the whole world that it does not need to blindly follow anyone. And with its self-confidence it can conquer everyone. In 1925, a few days before his birthday, he expressed his desire in ‘Young India’ to see India independent, strong and powerful. In 1931, he said that such an India should be built in which all facilities should be made available to the poor first. Today I am happy that after a long time of independence, our country is moving forward despite facing global challenges for the last ten-eleven years. And through inclusive growth, it is ensuring that all the benefits of India’s development reach the last person in the queue. The harmony and brotherhood that Bapu spoke about is becoming a reality today. The work of bringing development to the centre stage of politics has been done by the Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi. Everyone’s support, everyone’s development, everyone’s trust and everyone’s efforts are taking India forward rapidly on the path of progress. The Lieutenant Governor of Jammu & Kashmir, Shri Manoj Sinha was addressing on the birth anniversary of Lal Bahadur Shastri ji and Bapu ji.
