In retrospect, I can say that I never wanted to be here, taking drugs. Due to the circumstances at home, and because of my friends circle I landed in this mess, said a youth in repentance in Jammu and Kashmir. Today, as a rehabilitated person I want to send across this message to my younger and elder brothers, to stop the use of drugs. There is nothing in it. It sucks life. A lot of money gets wasted. I bang my head and ask myself, why did I ever do it? A doctor at a drug rehabilitation centre in Srinagar’s Shri Maharaja Hari Singh Hosspital (SMHS), J&K said, these affect our brain. The neurotransmitters dopamime, serotonin, endorphin and oxytocin get affected. After the use of drugs, people feel happy, that means dopamine is being released. During pain, depression or withdrawal symptom, endorphin gets released. Or after having drugs, if the mood is not right, or sleep is disturbed then serotonin gets released. So the drugs are affecting various parts of the brain. Whether it is heroin, cannabis, any solvent or hallucinogens, these attack our senses. The drug rehabilitation doctor explained how the drug users think that they are taking drugs and are not causing harm to anyone. On the contrary, the whole family of a drug user, mother, father, brother, sister, cousins get affected. A youth said people should follow namaz and Quran then no power can distract them toward drugs. We have to lead our lives, eat, drink and work till our destined death so why not lead it in a good way so that parents and family are happy. You should also do something for society, the youth said. The rehabilitated youth free of drugs said, there is absolutely nothing in drugs. It is time waste, life waste and most of all money waste, hoping to create awareness and realisation among the affected ones.
