Rajouri, June 24,2026-In the border village of Mayari near the Line of Control (LoC) in Rajouri district, a progressive farmer has emerged as a symbol of agricultural innovation and rural prosperity by transforming traditional farmland into flourishing flower fields that generate substantial income.
Balbir Kumar, a resident of Mayari village, has successfully converted nearly 25 kanals of land into a thriving floriculture venture. Through the cultivation of a variety of flowers, he is earning lakhs of rupees annually, demonstrating the immense potential of floriculture as a profitable alternative to conventional farming practices.
What began as an experimental initiative has grown into a successful enterprise, attracting the attention of farmers across the region. Supported by the Floriculture Department and various government schemes aimed at promoting high-value agriculture, Balbir adopted scientific cultivation methods and diversified into flower farming to enhance returns from his land.
The colorful flower fields not only provide a steady source of income but have also created employment opportunities and encouraged neighbouring farmers to explore floriculture as a viable livelihood option. According to Balbir, flower cultivation offers better market returns compared to many traditional crops, provided proper planning, technical guidance, and market access are available.
Officials from the Floriculture Department have praised his efforts, describing the venture as an example of how government support and farmer entrepreneurship can drive agricultural transformation in border areas. They noted that floriculture is emerging as a promising sector in Jammu and Kashmir, offering farmers opportunities to diversify income and reduce dependence on traditional crops.
The success story of Balbir Kumar highlights the growing trend of high-value farming in rural Jammu and Kashmir. His achievements are inspiring many farmers, particularly in border regions, to adopt modern agricultural practices and explore new avenues for sustainable income generation.
