Fierce encounter breaks out in Bandipora, Jammu and Kashmir, amid rising tensions

Bandipora, April 25, 2025: A high-intensity encounter erupted between terrorists and security forces in the Kulnar Bazipora area of Bandipora district, Jammu and Kashmir, on Friday morning, as part of a targeted cordon and search operation. The clash, initiated after terrorists fired upon approaching security personnel, underscores the heightened security measures in the region following the devastating Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, 2025, which killed 26 people, mostly tourists.

The operation, dubbed “Operation Kolnar Ajas,” was launched by a joint team of the Indian Army’s Chinar Corps and the Jammu and Kashmir Police based on credible intelligence about the presence of terrorists in the forested terrain of Kulnar Bazipora. “Security forces established contact with the terrorists, leading to an ongoing firefight,” the Chinar Corps posted on X. As of now, no casualties have been reported, and the area remains sealed to prevent the terrorists’ escape.

The encounter follows a series of counter-terrorism operations across Jammu and Kashmir, spurred by the recent Pahalgam attack, attributed to The Resistance Front, a shadow group of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba. Bandipora, strategically located near Kupwara and known for its rugged terrain, has been a hotspot for militant activities, making such operations both critical and complex.

Eyewitnesses reported hearing heavy gunfire in the area, with security forces maintaining a tight cordon around the suspected hideout. The operation reflects the government’s resolve to combat terrorism, as reiterated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who vowed to pursue and punish those responsible for attacks like Pahalgam.

Local residents have been urged to stay indoors as the operation continues. The encounter highlights the persistent security challenges in Jammu and Kashmir, with security forces intensifying efforts to dismantle terrorist networks in the region.
