Farming Is Our Backbone: Tral’s Elder Farmers Speak As Youth Drift Away from Fields Tral is situated 40km from Srinagar and located in Pulwama district of Jammu & Kashmir. Agriculture is like the backbone of Jammu and Kashmir, said a man in J&K. There is a hope of a huge harvest in agriculture and there is hope of income. The mustard crop was very good last year and the same is expected this year too. We had sown mustard seeds in October. Now we will reap in a month’s time, said another elderly farmer. If the flowers get infected by insects then there is medicine for it. Children these days do not want to do farming. They want to get a job but they do not get it and if they get it, they are not capable of it, said one farmer. The young ones are not capable of doing hard labour. When paddy is sown, 40 days of hard work is required. Today’s young generation should come forward and take advantage of the government schemes in agriculture, horticulture and allied industries, said the J&K farmer.
