Kashmir,January 9,2026-Srinagar experienced a harsh winter on Friday as temperatures plunged to a biting −6°C, causing the interior waters of Dal Lake to freeze for the first time this season. The frozen lake, surrounded by snow-draped mountains and shivering houseboats, has become a major attraction, drawing tourists eager to witness the breathtaking wintry spectacle.
Residents and visitors took to the lake’s shores to enjoy activities such as walking on the frozen surface, clicking photographs, and experiencing the rare sight of the iconic Dal Lake encased in ice. Locals said that while the severe cold posed challenges, it also added a unique charm to the city’s winter season.
The Meteorological Department has forecast continued cold conditions for the coming days, with temperatures expected to remain below the seasonal average. Snowfall in surrounding areas and the frozen lake are likely to enhance the region’s appeal to winter tourists.
Authorities have advised visitors and residents to exercise caution while venturing near the frozen lake and ensure proper safety measures. Despite the cold, the spectacle has reaffirmed Kashmir’s status as a prime winter tourism destination, offering scenic beauty and memorable experiences.
