Jammu I March 20, 2025 – Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced ambitious accommodation initiatives aimed at enhancing facilities for Jammu and Kashmir residents visiting Delhi and Chandigarh. The plans include constructing a new JK Bhawan complex in Dwarka, New Delhi, and upgrading an existing property in Chandigarh’s Sector-17, with a focus on supporting medical travellers while prioritising the region’s heritage and local employment.
Addressing the Legislative Assembly, CM Abdullah highlighted the pressing need to tackle the limited space at J&K House in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi, a challenge exacerbated by the allocation of significant portions of the guest house to the Union Territory of Ladakh following the 2019 reorganization. To resolve this, the government has acquired a 3,179.58-square-meter plot on a perpetual lease from the Delhi Development Authority in Dwarka. “The JK Bhawan complex in Dwarka will provide accessible and modern facilities for J&K visitors, reflecting our commitment to their welfare,” Abdullah stated.
In Chandigarh, the Chief Minister revealed plans to modify a government-owned property in Sector-17 to better serve medical travellers from J&K, particularly those seeking treatment at nearby institutions like the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research. “We are ensuring proper accommodation for patients and their families, with upgrades to be completed after securing necessary permissions,” he assured.
A key feature of these initiatives is the emphasis on preserving Jammu and Kashmir’s architectural heritage in the design of the new buildings, alongside promoting traditional cuisine. Additionally, Abdullah underscored the prioritization of local employment, promising that the projects would create job opportunities for J&K residents during and after construction. “These developments will not only address accommodation needs but also showcase our cultural identity and boost our workforce,” he added.
The announcements have been met with optimism, with stakeholders viewing them as a step toward improving infrastructure and support systems for J&K residents traveling outside the Union Territory. The initiatives align with broader efforts to enhance accessibility and quality of life, reinforcing the government’s commitment to its people.
