Kashmir Ahead

Chenab tunnels get ₹9,700 Cr boost

Doda, April 15,2026- In a landmark decision aimed at strengthening infrastructure in the mountainous Chenab Valley, the government has approved the construction of two major tunnel projects—Sudhmahadev–Dranga and Singhpora–Vailoo. The twin projects, with an estimated cost of ₹9,700 crore, are expected to significantly enhance connectivity and drive socio-economic growth in the region.

The tunnels will provide much-needed all-weather road access, reducing travel time and ensuring safer transportation across difficult terrain. The Chenab region, known for its challenging topography and frequent weather disruptions, has long faced connectivity constraints that impact daily life, trade, and access to essential services.

Officials said the projects are part of a broader strategy to improve road infrastructure and integrate remote areas with the rest of Jammu & Kashmir. Districts like Doda, Kishtwar, and Ramban are expected to benefit immensely, with improved mobility likely to boost tourism, healthcare access, and local businesses.

The announcement has been widely welcomed by residents and public representatives. MLA Doda, Shakti Raj Parihar, termed the approval a “historic step” that will accelerate development and open new economic opportunities for the region.

Experts believe that once completed, these tunnels will not only ease transportation challenges but also strengthen regional integration, promote investment, and generate employment during both construction and operational phases.

The twin tunnel projects mark a significant milestone in the government’s push to modernize infrastructure in Jammu & Kashmir and ensure balanced regional development.
