Budgam, January 20,2026-Deputy Commissioner Budgam, Dr. Bilal Mohi-Ud-Din Bhat (IAS), on Tuesday distributed 253 ice boxes among fishers and fish farmers under the Jammu and Kashmir Competitive Improvement Project (JKCIP), aimed at reducing post-harvest losses, improving hygiene standards, and enhancing incomes in the fisheries sector.
The initiative is part of the administration’s broader efforts to strengthen livelihoods and promote sustainable growth in the fisheries sector across the district. The ice boxes will help beneficiaries preserve fish for longer durations, maintain quality during transportation, and access better market opportunities.
Speaking on the occasion, the Deputy Commissioner said that post-harvest losses significantly affect the income of fishers and fish farmers, and such interventions are crucial to ensure better returns for their hard work. He emphasized that improving cold-chain infrastructure at the grassroots level plays a key role in boosting productivity and profitability.
Officials said the support under JKCIP is designed to modernise the fisheries sector by providing essential infrastructure, technical assistance, and capacity-building support to local stakeholders. The programme also aims to encourage hygienic handling practices and value addition in fish production.
Beneficiaries welcomed the initiative, stating that the ice boxes would help them reduce spoilage, improve product quality, and strengthen their livelihoods.
The district administration reiterated its commitment to supporting fishers and fish farmers through targeted schemes and interventions, contributing to economic self-reliance and rural development in Budgam district.
