Kashmir Ahead

Kashmir, June 4,2026-Jammu & Kashmir fast bowler Auqib Nabi could be on the verge of earning his maiden India call-up for the upcoming one-off Test against Afghanistan, as the team management assesses the workload and fitness of senior pacer Mohammed Siraj ahead of the match scheduled to begin on June 6 in New Chandigarh.

According to reports, Siraj’s availability remains uncertain after a demanding IPL 2026 campaign, where he featured in all 17 matches for Gujarat Titans. With India already resting premier fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah for workload management, selectors are taking a cautious approach regarding Siraj’s participation in the Afghanistan Test.

If Siraj is rested, Auqib Nabi has emerged as the leading candidate to join the Indian squad. The Baramulla-born pacer has already been training with the national side as a net bowler and is reportedly on standby for the fixture.

Auqib’s rise has been one of the biggest success stories in Indian domestic cricket this season. The 29-year-old played a pivotal role in Jammu & Kashmir’s historic maiden Ranji Trophy triumph, finishing as the tournament’s highest wicket-taker with 60 wickets. His outstanding performances also earned him the Player of the Tournament award.

The Jammu & Kashmir pacer has attracted widespread attention for his consistency with the ball and ability to deliver under pressure. His stellar domestic campaign also earned him a lucrative IPL contract with Delhi Capitals, further highlighting his growing reputation in Indian cricket.

Former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar had earlier criticized the selectors for overlooking Auqib in the original Test squad, arguing that a bowler who claimed 60 wickets in a Ranji Trophy-winning season deserved national recognition.

While no final decision has been taken on Siraj’s availability, the coming days could prove crucial for Auqib Nabi. A call-up would mark a historic moment not only for the talented seamer but also for Jammu & Kashmir cricket, which continues to produce players capable of competing at the highest level.
