Bandipora, December 23,2025:In a remarkable feat of endurance and exploration, Danish Nabi, a young explorer from Bandipora district, has successfully explored and documented 100 alpine lakes across Jammu and Kashmir, shedding light on the region’s vast yet lesser-known high-altitude water bodies.
Over the course of multiple expeditions, Danish traversed some of the most remote and challenging terrains of the Himalayas, reaching alpine lakes located at elevations ranging from 10,000 to over 15,000 feet. These lakes, many of which remain unexplored and unnamed, are scattered across districts including Bandipora, Ganderbal, Anantnag, Shopian, Kupwara, Kulgam, Rajouri, and Poonch.
Danish Nabi said the initiative was driven by a desire to document Kashmir’s fragile alpine ecosystem and highlight the importance of conserving high-altitude freshwater resources. “These lakes are not just natural wonders; they are critical sources of water for rivers, glaciers, and downstream communities. Protecting them is essential for ecological balance,” he said.
The expeditions involved long treks, unpredictable weather, sub-zero temperatures, and difficult mountain passes, often requiring days of hiking with minimal logistical support. Despite these challenges, Danish meticulously recorded geographical coordinates, altitude details, seasonal conditions, and visual documentation of each lake.
Environmentalists and local residents have appreciated the effort, noting that such explorations can contribute to climate change research, eco-tourism planning, and environmental awareness in Jammu and Kashmir. Experts believe that proper documentation of alpine lakes can help authorities design better conservation and sustainable tourism strategies.
Danish Nabi also emphasised the need for responsible trekking and eco-friendly exploration, urging adventure enthusiasts to minimise human impact on these pristine landscapes. He plans to compile his findings into a comprehensive digital archive and visual documentation project to inspire youth and support environmental studies.
His achievement stands as a testament to the spirit of exploration among Kashmir’s youth, highlighting the region’s immense natural heritage and the growing role of young explorers in environmental conservation.
