Kishtwar , November 7,2026- In a significant initiative to promote grassroots sports, youth empowerment and community participation, the Department of Youth Services and Sports (YSS), Kishtwar, organised a series of sports activities across 19 tribal villages of the district as part of the celebrations of Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas 2026.
The initiative witnessed enthusiastic participation from young people, highlighting the growing interest in sports among tribal communities and providing rural youth with opportunities to showcase their sporting abilities.
A variety of sporting competitions, including Kabaddi, Volleyball, Kho-Kho, Chess and Carrom, were organised across the participating villages. These activities brought together children and young people from different age groups, creating an atmosphere of enthusiasm, teamwork and healthy competition.
The events were designed to encourage greater participation in sports at the grassroots level, particularly in remote and tribal areas where access to organised sporting opportunities can sometimes be limited. By taking sports activities directly to these villages, the department aimed to ensure that young talent receives encouragement and opportunities irrespective of geographical or social barriers.
The competitions also provided participants with an opportunity to develop essential life skills such as discipline, leadership, cooperation, confidence and sportsmanship. Traditional team games like Kabaddi and Kho-Kho encouraged physical fitness, coordination and collective effort, while Volleyball offered participants an opportunity to demonstrate teamwork and competitive spirit.
Indoor activities such as Chess and Carrom added another dimension to the programme by encouraging concentration, strategic thinking, patience and decision-making among young participants.
The organisation of these activities across 19 tribal villages reflects the importance of inclusive sports development and the need to reach communities at the grassroots level. Such initiatives help identify emerging talent in rural areas and encourage young people to explore their potential through structured sporting activities.
Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas is observed every year on November 15 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Bhagwan Birsa Munda, the revered tribal freedom fighter and leader. The occasion celebrates the contribution of tribal communities to India’s history, culture and national development while highlighting their rich heritage, traditions and achievements.
The observance also provides an opportunity to recognise the importance of empowering tribal youth through education, sports, skill development and greater participation in community activities.
In Kishtwar, the sports programme served as a platform to connect the celebrations with youth engagement and community development. The participation of young people from 19 villages demonstrated how sporting activities can bring communities together while promoting a spirit of unity, equality and mutual respect.
Sports have an important role in shaping the personality of young people. Apart from improving physical health, participation in games helps individuals develop resilience, determination and the ability to work towards shared goals. For youth living in remote areas, such opportunities can also provide motivation to pursue sports at higher levels.
The initiative by Youth Services and Sports Kishtwar underscores the department’s efforts to expand sporting activities beyond urban centres and make sports more accessible to young people in tribal and rural communities.
By encouraging participation in multiple indoor and outdoor disciplines, the programme also highlighted the importance of providing diverse sporting opportunities suited to the interests and abilities of different participants.
The enthusiastic response across the 19 tribal villages made the initiative an important part of the district-level observance of Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas 2026.
Such grassroots initiatives can contribute significantly to building a strong sporting culture, identifying local talent and ensuring that young people from every section of society get an opportunity to participate, compete and excel.
Through these activities, Kishtwar reinforced the message that sports are not merely about winning competitions but also about building confidence, promoting inclusivity and creating opportunities for the next generation.
