Kashmir Ahead

Fresh snowfall in Gulmarg’s affarwat, rain brings down temperatures across Kashmir

Srinagar, October 13,2026- Fresh snowfall was reported in Affarwat in Gulmarg, while rain lashed parts of Kashmir, bringing down temperatures across the Valley and signalling the approach of colder weather.

The upper reaches of north Kashmir received a fresh layer of snow, adding to the scenic beauty of the ski resort in Baramulla district. In the plains, rain brought relief from the dry spell and led to a noticeable dip in both day and night temperatures.

Snow returns to Affarwat

Affarwat, the highest skiing point in Gulmarg, is usually among the first places in the Valley to receive snow as winter nears. The fresh snowfall has transformed the slopes once again, drawing the attention of tourists, locals and nature lovers.

Gulmarg is among the most popular winter destinations in the country, known for its meadows, gondola cable car and ski slopes. Even a light spell of snow in the upper reaches is welcomed by those linked to the tourism sector, as it marks the beginning of the winter season.

Rain lowers temperatures

While the higher reaches saw snow, the plains and lower areas received rain. As a result, temperatures dropped across Kashmir, and cold conditions returned in many places. Residents have begun to bring out woollens, and the chill is particularly noticeable in the mornings and evenings.

Rain after a dry period also settles dust and improves air quality in towns and cities. It is also useful for farmland and orchards, where moisture is needed as the season changes.

Boost for tourism

The snowfall has raised hopes among hoteliers, tour operators, ski instructors, taxi drivers and others who depend on winter tourism. For many families in Gulmarg and nearby areas, the winter months are the busiest period of the year.

Early snow often prompts visitors to plan trips to the Valley, and tourism stakeholders are hopeful that the first snowfall will bring more visitors in the coming weeks.

Impact on daily life

The fall in temperature brings both comfort and challenges. Many people welcome the cooler weather after warmer days, but wet roads and cold conditions can affect travel, particularly in hilly areas.

Residents and travellers are advised to take the following precautions:

  • Check weather updates from the Meteorological Department before travelling, especially to high-altitude areas.
  • Drive slowly on wet or slippery roads and keep safe distances between vehicles.
  • Carry warm clothing, footwear with good grip and essential supplies on trips to the hills.
  • Avoid unnecessary travel to snow-bound areas if the weather worsens.

Preparing for winter

The change in weather is also a reminder for authorities and residents to prepare for the colder months. Departments responsible for roads, power supply and water are usually asked to keep arrangements ready for snowfall, including equipment for clearing roads and maintaining essential services.

Households in Kashmir also begin their winter preparations as temperatures fall, from stocking fuel and food supplies to arranging heating.

A scenic sight

For visitors, the sight of fresh snow on the mountains is among the most beautiful sights Kashmir has to offer. Photographs and videos of snow-covered Affarwat are often widely shared, adding to the Valley’s appeal as a winter destination.

Weather experts generally advise that the Valley can see changing conditions at this time of year, so residents should keep an eye on official forecasts.

Outlook

With temperatures dipping and snow back on the higher reaches, winter appears to be gradually setting in across Kashmir. Tourism operators and residents will be watching the weather closely in the coming days.

For now, the fresh snowfall in Affarwat has added a fresh layer of white to Gulmarg’s landscape and a sense of anticipation for the season ahead.
