Bugam village of Chadoora in Budgam district, popularly known as the “Chhota Punjab of Kashmir,” has a rich tradition of vegetable cultivation. For nearly three decades, local farmers have been growing vegetables and supplying fresh produce to markets across Jammu and Kashmir and other parts of the country. Progressive farmer Mukhtar Ahmad Bhat has benefited from the Holistic Agriculture Development Programme (HADP) by establishing a mini high-tech polyhouse with 95 percent government subsidy. The facility has enabled him to adopt modern protected cultivation techniques and grow crops such as tomatoes and cucumbers in a controlled environment. According to Mukhtar, the scheme has improved production, quality and the regularity of vegetable supply. His produce is sold in local markets as well as markets outside Jammu and Kashmir, creating better income opportunities for his family and employment opportunities for others associated with vegetable farming. Mukhtar believes the scheme is particularly beneficial for small and economically weaker farmers, as they need to contribute only a small portion of the project cost. He also encouraged unemployed youth to explore modern agriculture as a sustainable livelihood. His success story demonstrates how government support, modern technology and farmers’ dedication can transform traditional farming into a profitable and sustainable enterprise.
