Udhampur, August 7,2026- Rural women in Udhampur are taking significant strides toward economic empowerment through the Government of India’s Samarth Scheme, as a month-long wool processing and handloom training programme is helping them acquire valuable skills for sustainable livelihoods.
Organised by the Sheep Husbandry Department, the training programme has brought together 30 rural women, providing hands-on instruction in wool processing, spinning, weaving, and the production of value-added woollen products. The initiative aims to enhance self-employment opportunities while preserving the region’s rich handloom and wool craft traditions.
Participants are being trained in modern techniques that improve product quality and market value, enabling them to transform locally available wool into high-quality handcrafted items. The programme also focuses on entrepreneurship, encouraging women to establish small-scale enterprises and contribute to the rural economy.
Officials said the initiative aligns with the Government of India’s vision of strengthening rural livelihoods, promoting women-led development, and supporting traditional artisans through skill development. By combining modern training with indigenous craftsmanship, the programme seeks to increase income opportunities and create a sustainable value chain for the wool sector.
