Srinagar, July 26,2026– Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in the 136th episode of Mann Ki Baat, lauded the efforts of Kashmiri artisans working to preserve the Valley’s centuries-old ‘Wagu’ mat-making tradition, describing their dedication as an inspiring example of how skill and determination can revive India’s rich cultural heritage.
Addressing the nation, the Prime Minister said that when skill is combined with passion, even the most difficult challenges become easier to overcome. He cited the story of Ghulam Hussain and his daughter Tanzila from Srinagar, who have devoted themselves to reviving the traditional Wagu craft, once an integral part of Kashmir’s cultural identity.
The Prime Minister explained that Wagu is a traditional mat handcrafted from reeds and paddy straw, a practice that has been passed down through generations in Kashmir. He noted that despite belonging to a humble family and facing numerous hardships, Ghulam Hussain remained steadfast in his mission to preserve the ancient craft.
PM Modi said the artisan’s unwavering commitment gradually inspired others to join the initiative, transforming an individual effort into a broader movement to safeguard an important aspect of Kashmir’s traditional craftsmanship.
Highlighting the significance of preserving indigenous art forms, the Prime Minister said such initiatives not only protect India’s cultural heritage but also create new livelihood opportunities for local artisans while encouraging younger generations to take pride in their traditional skills.
The Prime Minister’s mention of the Wagu craft in Mann Ki Baat has brought national attention to one of Kashmir’s lesser-known traditional handicrafts, reinforcing the importance of conserving age-old practices through innovation, dedication, and community participation.
