Pulwama farmer doubles income with lavender cultivation in high-density apple orchard

Pulwama, July 3, 2026 In a remarkable example of agricultural innovation, Ajaz Ahmad Bhat, a progressive farmer from Pulwama, has successfully doubled his income by integrating lavender cultivation with his high-density apple orchard, creating a sustainable and profitable farming model that is inspiring growers across the region.

Instead of leaving the space between apple tree rows unused, Bhat has planted lavender, making efficient use of available land while generating an additional source of income. The aromatic crop not only complements the orchard but also enhances the overall productivity of the farm through diversified cultivation.

Taking innovation a step further, Bhat established a lavender oil extraction unit, enabling him to process the harvested flowers into high-value essential lavender oil. By adding value to his produce, he has significantly increased his earnings while reducing dependence on the sale of raw agricultural products.

The successful integration of apple farming and lavender cultivation has emerged as a model for crop diversification in Jammu and Kashmir. Farmers visiting Bhat’s orchard are drawing inspiration from his approach, which demonstrates how scientific farming techniques and value addition can improve profitability and strengthen rural livelihoods.

The initiative aligns with ongoing efforts to promote aromatic crops, high-density horticulture, and value-added agriculture in the Union Territory. Experts believe such innovative practices can help farmers maximise land use, create new market opportunities, and build resilient farming systems.

Ajaz Ahmad Bhat’s success story stands as an example of how innovation, diversification, and entrepreneurship can transform traditional farming into a sustainable and profitable enterprise, encouraging more farmers in Kashmir to adopt modern agricultural practices.
