Udhampur Cocoon auction market emerges as hub of prosperity for sericulture farmers

Udhampur, June 20,2026- The Sericulture Office Complex in Udhampur has transformed into a vibrant centre of economic activity as the ongoing Cocoon Auction Market records significant transactions, providing a major boost to silkworm rearers across the district.

The auction market, which commenced on June 6, 2026, and is expected to conclude around June 20 or 21, has emerged as a direct and profitable platform for sericulture farmers to sell their cocoons at competitive prices. The initiative has enabled growers to connect directly with buyers, ensuring transparent bidding and better returns for their produce.

Farmers from various parts of Udhampur district have been participating in large numbers, bringing high-quality cocoons to the market. The auction process has witnessed strong demand from traders and reelers, resulting in encouraging prices and increased earnings for silkworm rearers.

Officials from the Sericulture Department said the market plays a crucial role in strengthening the rural economy by providing assured marketing opportunities and fair price discovery. The initiative has helped eliminate intermediaries, allowing farmers to maximize profits from their hard work and investment.

The Cocoon Auction Market has also highlighted the growing importance of sericulture as a sustainable livelihood option in Jammu and Kashmir. With improved production practices, government support, and expanding market access, the sector continues to create employment and income opportunities for rural households.

Participants expressed satisfaction over the transparent auction mechanism and the favourable rates being offered, describing the market as a valuable platform that contributes significantly to their annual income.

As the auction season nears its conclusion, officials remain optimistic about achieving record business volumes, further reinforcing Udhampur’s position as a key sericulture hub in the Union Territory.
