Kashmir, May 6,2026- In a significant step toward strengthening the livestock sector, the Animal Husbandry Department in Jammu and Kashmir has introduced a high-yield Swiss goat breed, popularly known as the “Milk Queen,” to boost dairy production and rural livelihoods.
The Swiss-origin breed, widely identified as the Saanen goat, is globally recognized for its exceptional milk yield, adaptability, and calm temperament. Its introduction marks a shift toward scientific livestock farming practices aimed at increasing productivity and farmer income.
Officials stated that the initiative is part of a broader strategy to modernize the animal husbandry sector in the region. By promoting high-performing breeds alongside improved breeding and management practices, the department seeks to create sustainable income avenues, particularly for small and marginal farmers.
Under the program, selected beneficiaries are being provided with the new breed along with training in scientific animal husbandry techniques. These include balanced nutrition, disease prevention, hygienic milking practices, and proper shelter management to ensure optimal productivity.
Farmers across several districts have shown growing interest in adopting the “Milk Queen” breed, seeing it as an opportunity to enhance milk output and profitability. Authorities have also stressed the need for proper acclimatization and veterinary support to help the breed adapt to local climatic conditions.
The initiative aligns with the government’s push to strengthen agriculture and allied sectors, improve rural livelihoods, and promote self-reliance. Enhanced milk production is expected to contribute not only to farmers’ incomes but also to nutritional security in the region.
The move is likely to play a key role in transforming the dairy landscape of Kashmir Valley, positioning it as a growing hub for high-quality livestock and dairy development.
