Kashmir Ahead

Rural transformation picks up in J&K under G RAM G

Kashmir,April 21,2026- Jammu & Kashmir is steadily aligning with the Centre’s Viksit Bharat – G RAM G framework, aimed at expanding rural employment, ensuring timely wages, and empowering Panchayats through grassroots planning.

The new model guarantees 125 days of wage employment to rural households—an increase from earlier provisions—offering greater financial security to families in remote and border areas of the Union Territory. Officials say the transition is being integrated into existing rural development systems to ensure continuity without disruption.

Decentralised Planning Through Gram Sabhas

At the heart of implementation in J&K is the Viksit Gram Panchayat Plan (VGPP).
Gram Sabhas across districts are actively identifying local development priorities—ranging from road connectivity and irrigation to water conservation and community assets. These plans are then consolidated at the Panchayat level, ensuring that projects reflect real grassroots needs.

The approach is particularly relevant in J&K, where terrain and accessibility vary widely, requiring location-specific development planning.

Focus on Timely Wages & Accountability

Authorities have placed strong emphasis on timely wage payments, a long-standing concern in rural employment schemes.
Under the new provisions:

  • Workers are entitled to compensation in case of payment delays
  • Unemployment allowance is strengthened if work is not provided within a stipulated time

Digital monitoring tools, including online muster rolls and geo-tagging of works, are being used across districts to enhance transparency and accountability.

Boost to Rural Infrastructure

In Jammu & Kashmir, the scheme is being leveraged to create durable rural assets. Key focus areas include:

  • Water conservation structures in drought-prone belts
  • Rural roads in hilly and far-flung villages
  • Flood control and land development works

Officials note that such projects not only generate employment but also support long-term economic resilience.

Administrative Push Across Districts

District administrations and Rural Development Departments have initiated awareness drives to inform villagers about the enhanced benefits under G RAM G. Panchayat representatives are being trained to prepare and execute VGPPs effectively, while efforts are underway to streamline job demand registration at the village level.

Given J&K’s status as a Union Territory, higher central support is expected to aid smoother execution and faster rollout of projects.

A Step Towards ‘Viksit Bharat’

The implementation of G RAM G in Jammu & Kashmir is seen as a step toward building self-reliant rural communities, reducing distress migration, and strengthening local governance structures.

With increased employment days, better wage assurance, and community-led planning, the initiative is gradually reshaping the rural development landscape in the region.
