Kashmir Ahead

Revival of Kashmir silk industry creates new opportunities

Srinagar, April 18,2026- The silk industry in Kashmir is witnessing a steady revival as government-backed support measures and subsidy schemes breathe new life into the traditional sericulture sector. Once globally renowned for its high-quality mulberry silk, the industry is now regaining momentum, creating fresh livelihood opportunities for farmers and youth across the region.

Officials said targeted interventions under various sericulture development programmes have encouraged renewed interest in mulberry cultivation and silk production. Subsidies on mulberry saplings, silkworm rearing equipment, and technical training are helping farmers re-enter the sector, which had seen a significant decline over the past decades.

The revival is also being driven by growing participation of rural youth, many of whom are now adopting sericulture as a sustainable income source. Training camps and awareness initiatives are being conducted to enhance skills in cocoon production, disease management, and modern rearing techniques.

Experts believe the resurgence of Kashmir’s silk industry could significantly boost rural employment while restoring the region’s historic identity in the global silk market. Improved infrastructure and market linkages are further expected to strengthen the value chain from cocoon production to silk yarn processing.

The government has reiterated its commitment to promoting sericulture as a viable rural enterprise, focusing on innovation, capacity building, and financial assistance to ensure long-term sustainability of the sector.
