Kashmir Ahead

J&K LG Manoj Sinha orders crackdown on big drug dealers, directs police to act fast

Jammu, April 10, 2026- In a strong push against the growing drug menace, the administration led by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has issued clear directions to law enforcement agencies to identify major drug traffickers and ensure their arrest across Jammu and Kashmir.

According to official sources, police have been instructed to focus on “big fishes” in the narcotics network, with a target to identify key drug dealers operating in each district and take decisive action against them. The directive emphasizes that dismantling the core network of suppliers and kingpins is crucial to effectively curb drug abuse in the Union Territory.

The administration has asked Deputy Commissioners and Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs) to work in close coordination and intensify enforcement efforts. Authorities believe that targeting major traffickers will significantly weaken the drug supply chain and reduce availability at the grassroots level.

Multi-Pronged Anti-Drug Strategy

The move is part of a broader strategy under the “Nasha Mukt Jammu & Kashmir Abhiyan,” which aims to eliminate drug abuse through strict enforcement, awareness campaigns, and rehabilitation initiatives. The LG administration is preparing for an intensive anti-drug drive covering multiple districts, with a focus on both prevention and recovery.

Officials have also highlighted the role of cross-border smuggling in fueling the narcotics trade. Intelligence inputs suggest that drugs entering from across the border are being used not only for illegal trade but also for financing terrorism, making the crackdown even more critical from a security perspective.

Rehabilitation & Public Participation

Alongside enforcement, the administration is planning to establish one to two de-addiction and rehabilitation centres in every district through the Health Department. These centres will aim to help affected youth reintegrate into society through treatment and support schemes.

The LG has also called for a whole-of-society approach, urging civil society members, religious leaders, youth organisations, and public representatives to actively participate in the anti-drug campaign. Public awareness and community involvement are seen as key pillars in tackling the crisis.

Earlier, the LG had described the influx of drugs into Jammu and Kashmir as part of a larger conspiracy targeting the future of youth, and stressed the need for continuous and intensive drives to dismantle trafficking networks.

Zero Tolerance Policy

Reiterating a “zero tolerance” approach, the administration has made it clear that while innocent individuals must be protected, those involved in drug trafficking will face strict legal action. Police have also been directed to ensure that cases are robust and stand firm in courts to secure long-term convictions.

With a combination of strict policing, rehabilitation measures, and public engagement, the J&K administration aims to launch one of the most comprehensive crackdowns on drug networks in the region.
