J&K reclaims 3,700 kanals, Shopian leads recovery

Srinagar, April 3, 2026- The Jammu and Kashmir administration has reclaimed more than 3,700 kanals of land that had been illegally occupied since the 1990 exodus of Kashmiri Pandits, marking a significant step towards restoring property rights of displaced families.

The anti-encroachment drive, conducted across multiple districts, focuses on properties left behind by Kashmiri Pandits who migrated from the Valley during the peak of militancy in the early 1990s.

Officials said multiple FIRs have been registered against individuals involved in незакон occupation of these lands, with authorities initiating strict legal action to prevent further encroachments and ensure accountability.

In Shopian district alone, the administration has successfully reclaimed around 283 kanals of land and several properties. Local authorities have intensified verification and eviction processes to accelerate the restoration of such assets.

Members of the Kashmiri Pandit community have welcomed the move, expressing gratitude to the administration and describing it as a long-awaited step towards justice and rehabilitation.

The administration has reiterated its commitment to continue the drive and ensure that all illegally occupied properties of displaced families are identified and restored in a time-bound manner.
