Jammu, March 31,2026-In a significant push towards strengthening higher education and healthcare infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir, the Central Government has approved the expansion of postgraduate dental seats at Indira Gandhi Government Dental College (IGGDC) Jammu, doubling the Master of Dental Surgery seats from 14 to 28.
The move is being seen as a major milestone in enhancing specialized dental education in the Union Territory. Officials stated that the increase in seats will not only provide greater opportunities for aspiring dental graduates within J&K but also help address the growing demand for skilled dental professionals in the region.
The approval has been granted in accordance with the norms of the Dental Council of India, ensuring that the institution meets all required standards in terms of faculty, infrastructure, and clinical exposure.
Sources in the health and medical education department said that the expansion covers multiple specializations under MDS, enabling students to pursue advanced training in fields such as orthodontics, prosthodontics, oral surgery, and periodontics. This development is expected to significantly improve the quality of dental healthcare services across J&K in the coming years.
Academicians and students have welcomed the decision, calling it a long-awaited step that will reduce the need for students to seek postgraduate dental education outside the Union Territory. It is also expected to strengthen research and innovation in dental sciences at IGGDC Jammu.
The initiative aligns with the Centre’s broader vision of upgrading medical and dental education infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir post-2019, aimed at improving accessibility, affordability, and quality of healthcare education.
