Udhampur women make eco-friendly holi colours from cow dung

Udhampur, March 3,2026: In a unique blend of tradition, sustainability and entrepreneurship, women in Udhampur are preparing chemical-free Holi colours from cow dung as part of a self-reliance initiative under the national campaign Self-Reliant India.

The initiative is being carried out at Shri Gokul Godham, where local women have come together to produce eco-friendly ‘gulal’ using natural ingredients mixed with processed cow dung. The colours are being marketed as safe, skin-friendly, and environmentally sustainable alternatives to synthetic Holi products.

Organisers said the initiative not only promotes green celebrations but also creates livelihood opportunities for rural women. By transforming locally available resources into marketable products, the women are contributing to income generation while supporting the broader vision of sustainable development.

The production process involves drying and sanitizing cow dung, converting it into fine powder, and blending it with natural dyes derived from flowers and herbs. The finished product is packaged attractively for local sale ahead of the Holi festival.

Participants expressed confidence that the initiative will strengthen their financial independence and encourage more women to engage in self-help and micro-enterprise ventures. The effort is also being seen as a step toward promoting organic products and reducing the environmental impact of festive celebrations.

The initiative reflects the growing spirit of entrepreneurship among women in rural Jammu & Kashmir and aligns with the national mission of empowering communities through local innovation.
