Bhaderwah, February 21,2026-In a significant push to strengthen the Purple Revolution in the Union Territory, the CSIR-Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine (CSIR-IIIM), Jammu, has procured and distributed nearly 6 lakh quality lavender seedlings among around 500 farmers in the picturesque Bhaderwah valley.
The initiative, undertaken under the guidance of Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh, aims to promote large-scale aromatic crop cultivation under the Centre’s flagship Aroma Mission. The programme is designed to transform agricultural practices in hilly and rain-fed regions by introducing high-value medicinal and aromatic plants.
Lavender cultivation has emerged as a game-changer for farmers in Bhaderwah, often referred to as the “Lavender Capital of India.” The region’s favourable climate and soil conditions have made it ideal for the crop, leading to higher productivity and quality essential oil extraction.
Officials said that the shift from traditional crops like maize and wheat to lavender has significantly enhanced farmers’ income. The aromatic plant requires relatively less water, offers better market returns, and has a strong demand in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and wellness industries.
The distribution of seedlings is expected to further expand the cultivation area, strengthen the value chain, and generate employment opportunities, particularly for rural youth and women. With support from CSIR-IIIM Jammu, farmers are also being provided technical guidance, distillation facilities, and market linkages to ensure sustainable growth.
The Purple Revolution, launched as part of the Aroma Mission, continues to empower rural communities, encourage green entrepreneurship, and position Jammu & Kashmir as a leading hub for lavender and other aromatic crops.
As fields in Bhaderwah bloom in shades of purple, the initiative stands as a symbol of innovation-driven rural development, blending science with grassroots empowerment for long-term economic transformation.
